ESU Debate Begins

ESU DEBATE rds 1 and 2.jpgThe debate competition season for the Mackay school has officially begun! On Saturday September 30th, members of the Mackay debate team traveled to the Villa María Academy in Santiago to participate in the first round of the 2017 ESU Debate competition.

After greeting members of the 11 other participating schools, Mackay Debaters Benjamin Bravo, Vicente Gonzalez, Juan Cristóbal Manriquez, and Christobal Buceta began their opening round heat with The Grange School. Faced with the challenging task of opposing the motion “This House Believes that Immigration stimulates local economies,” The Mackay school had difficulty adapting their arguments to the motion as it relates to the economy in Chile. Although they lost the first round, they paid close attention to the feedback they received, and gained valuable experience.

For the second round, they were asked to do an impromptu debate with St. George’s School. Mackay was given the side of the proposition this time, and the motion of their heat was, “This House Believes that the United States and China will be allies in the 21st century.” Opening Speaker Vicente Gonzalez set the stage and Benjamin Bravo and Juan Cristóbal Manriquez did a tremendous job of reinforcing arguments and providing pertinent points of information.

Team members are looking forward to the next heats which will at Colegio San Pedro Nolasco and the Grange School respectively.
