Buin Zoo: a traditional outing for 6th graders

On Wednesday 4th October sixth graders had the round up activity regarding the unit worked on during the English lessons “How does helping others help us all?” The students were able to see in flesh how a symbiotic relationship between animals worked.

During these last weeks students had been working on a project in which they had to create a zoo, buying animals, land and habitats for the zoo, restrooms, restaurants and souvenir shops. They had to draft the map of their zoo, complete animal classification cards, generate a flyer advertising the zoo and recording a radio commercial inviting the audience to visit them.

46 student and 5 teachers (Miss Ana María Ortiz, Miss Marcela Wilson, Miss Maureen Stead, Mr. Alfredo Calderón & Mr. Michael Rivera) took off early in the morning, arriving at the Zoo at 10:20 am. There they had some time to buy some souvenirs so really cute stuffed animals such as boas, snakes, panda bears, tigers and lemurs were with us throughout the guided tour of the Zoo.

The chosen tour was S.O.S animals, where we were able the see animals rescued from circuses and other zoos; rhinoceros and hippos with their little ones, jaguars and leopards, lions and white tigers. When we finished the guided tour one of the groups headed out to the Baby Zoo section, where students were able to pet goats, lambs, calves, pigs, bunnies and ponies.

Students enjoyed the visit very much, confirming this visit as a traditional activity for this grade.
